Denne utfordringen krever:
- Kvalitetsstandarder:
- Isolasjon (avstand eller andre teknikker)
- Riktig antall foreldreplanter
- Variasjonsbeskrivelse (slik at du faktisk vet hvordan sorten ser ut, smaker, butikker osv.)
- Helsekriterier
- Utdanningsmetoder
- Arttabell, linje 43 – 49 (dataene tilsvarer kvalitetsstandardene ovenfor)
- Varietabell, linje 3 – 33 (alle variasjonsspesifikke data tilgjengelig for sortbeskrivelser. Bør illustreres)
The following tables list the data categories, labels and types, with a short explanation.
NB! This is a starting point for a process that will have to take some time to settle. It is impossible to foresee all use cases and needs of different users, but it is better to start with a quite thorough list and do some thinking, than to just open with something like “here you can fill in your data”.
This process will touch the central questions we must ask, be it as an individual collector/ food security grower, small/medium bussiness (SMB) or non gov. plant organization (NGO).
- what are our goals?
- how do we work?
- exactly what kind of data do we need?
- how do we use them to help fulfill our goals?
One important excample for KVANN: seed quality
KVANNs main goal is to preserve, through active use, “heritage” varieties within cultivated plants. Well, then it is obviously necessary to make sure that members don’t spread among themselves seeds of poor quality, or KVANN could actually become an effective instrument for destruction rather than preservation. This challenge calls for:
- Quality standards:
- Isolation (distance or other techniques)
- Correct number of parent plants
- Variety description (so you actually know how the variety looks, tastes, stores etc)
- Health criteria
- Education methods
- Controll and report system (by self)
The best and probably only way to handle this, is to have those data easily accessible in a database and develop users interfaces for educational purposes (mainly self study, but also courses) and finally reporting. And we have a good foundation for this in
- Species table, lines 15 – 19 (about flowering time, pollination seed ripening etc) and 23 (plant diseases)
- Species table, lines 43 – 49 (the data corresponding to the quality standards above)
- Variety table, lines 3 – 33 (all the variety specific data available for variety descriptions. Should be illustrated)
